Craig and I took the morning off yesterday to do a run to our favourite out-of-the-way thrift store, House of Lazarus, in the town of Mountain (south-west of Ottawa, between Kemptville and Winchester). I really love this place for a three of reasons:
- They’re huge. They have a bungalow full of clothes and then, across the parking lot, a barn full of objects.
- They’re incredibly cheap. You think St. Vincent de Paul is cheap? Get down to House of Lazarus.
- They have amazing things. I don’t know what it is about country folks, but the things they give to the thrift stores go back to 60s and 70s at least. City thrift stores only go back as far as the 80s usually.
We got a bunch of silly things for our home like a shoe rack, an old chair that turns into a stepping stool, and a clip-on reading light for the chair. Craig bought himself a fan organ. I bought an old Fujica ST705-w camera from 1977. It’s got a sweet lens and I love playing with the focus and the shutter but I still can’t figure out how to open the back and put film in. I also bought a shiny, gold business card holder/calculator which you can see above. That is probably from the 80s but I couldn’t possibly resist such an amazing combination.
Have you ever found something crazy and awesome at the thrift store? Tell me about it in the comments below.

Sweet camera. I have a camera like that that is probably just a little bit newer. I’m sure I could help you figure out how to use it. I can also teach you about all that fancy manual camera stuff like aperture and shutter speeds if you need too.
Then we could have film camera shoot dates.
Yes, yes, and yes again. You have to come over soon so I can show you all the neat things that have been going on. Then we can go out and get film for the camera together and have a shoot date! Let’s do it!
